Speaking at the NOTIS workshop in Seattle, Washington, September 2009
Judy Jenner has been giving her popular “Entrepreneurial Linguist” workshops in both the U.S. and Europe, and has received fantastic positive feedback from attendees. If you would like to book a workshop for your T&I organization, small business association, etc. please send her an e-mail. Judy is available for travel within the United States and abroad.
Workshop abstract:
Linguists excel in the humanities, but most have little or no formal business training. We are all entrepreneurs, and to help my colleagues run their businesses more successfully, I developed a presentation based on the lessons I learned in business school (MBA, Marketing, University of Nevada Las Vegas, 2001). The presentation centers on working with direct clients.
This hands-on presentation has its main emphasis on marketing (to direct clients, social media, Web 2.0, competitive advantage), and includes sections on finance/economics (pricing, supply and demand), accounting (decreasing expenses), entrepreneurship (generating new business, networking), and negotiating (tips and tricks). Several discussion starters and exercises are part of the presentation. True to the case-study method from business school, many real-life examples are presented. No high-level terminology is used. The intention is for attendees to walk away from the session with some specific advice that they can start using immediately.

It’s great that you now have a site promoting the Entrepreneurial Linguist program. I’m going to send my professional association (ATIO) here in Canada a link to the site and encourage them to book a workshop.
@Tom: Thanks, Tom. We really appreciate you passing on the info to the Canadian association. I’d be delighted to share what I know with colleagues in Canada.
Thank you for sharing all these useful information on “entrepreneurial behavior” we should be adapting if we want to survive inflation, recession, competition, the world we live in (or just plain survive & still keep our heads up as interpreters/translators).
Your generosity of spirit is appreciated.
@Caroline: you are very welcome. I am delighted to hear you enjoyed the tips and strategies. I’ll keep on updating this website, so come on back!
